Position: Workers Compensation Underwriter

Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the person in this position applies underwriting guidelines in assessing risk factors of applications and quotes or declines applications based on available information and authorized authority level. This position requires a solid workers’ compensation insurance foundation including general and state specific rates, rules and regulations and exceptions. The underwriter is accountable for managing all underwriting aspects of a book of business within a designated underwriting authority.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Responsible for underwriting decisions of a designated book of business.
  Provides the highest level of customer service to agents, policyholders and co-workers.

• Maintain a high level of renewal retention through disciplined underwriting and pricing practices and strong relationships with the agents and CSR’s.

• Increases new business submission activity through effective communication with our agency force, knowledge of the marketplace, and identifying within company guidelines our target accounts.

• Develop and maintain relationships with assigned agents and brokers by effective communication and ongoing customer service. Market company products and services to designated agents and brokers to include claims services, loss control, underwriting and premium audit.

• Review and analyze new and renewal business risks for acceptability in accordance with company guidelines and standards.

• Secure, evaluate and interpret information to select, classify, and rate risks as well as read, write, and interpret policies and forms.

• Understand the impacts of change; explain decisions and identify and resolves customer problems and issues.

• Apply subjective judgment in considering program alternatives and select appropriate course of action.  Make appropriate and rational decisions on issues within authority and provides recommendations for those exceeding authority levels.

• Provide a leadership role in coordinating daily work activities including training and mentoring of junior team members.

• Willingness to learn new tasks and increase technical knowledge.  Acts as a department resource for underwriting technical knowledge.

• Work effectively in an empowered environment, manage a large volume of telephone calls, faxes and e-mails with timely responses to customers.  

• Provide additional value to agents by a through understanding of services including premium audit, loss control, and claims.

• Work effectively with others in a team environment.

• Ability to work outside of normal business hours depending on business needs.

• Other duties as assigned or as situation dictates.

Requirements:

• High level of core values.

• BA/BS in insurance, accounting, business, finance, marketing and/or related field.

• A combination of education and additional experience in workers’ compensation underwriting may be substituted for a BA/BS Degree.

• Excellent oral and written communication, listening, interpersonal, customer service and telephone skills.

• Highly proficient with personal computers, including data entry, word processing and spreadsheet programs.

• Detailed knowledge and understanding of NCCI rules and regulations.

• Understand and demonstrate working knowledge of “class fit” underwriting.
